Speech Pathology Services
The ODGP provides Speech Pathology Services from clinical hubs located in the Bourke and Walgett Local Government Areas. Located in the rural and remote Western and North Western region of NSW the credentialled speech pathologists service communities within 200 kms of each clinical hub.
The speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speech, language, fluency and voice. They work with people who have difficulty communicating because of developmental delays, stroke, brain injuries, learning disability, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, dementia and hearing loss, as well as other problems that can affect speech and language. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can also be helped by the speech pathologist.
Using assessment tools, speech pathologists are able to diagnose each person’s specific problem and devise a treatment plan that best suits their needs.
The Speech Pathologists work with people across the lifespan to support their communication and swallowing. As part of the Schools early intervention program the Speech Pathologists work with pre-school and early school age children to support their transition to school and development toward their full potential. The Speech Pathologists also work with adults with acquired brain injuries and their families to support their participation at home and in the community.
The Speech Pathologist work in a variety of settings including schools, Aged Care and General Practice settings. As a localised service, the ODGP Speech Pathologists provide the mainstay of early intervention and treatment services for people with communication and swallowing disorders in the far North-West Region or NSW. The Speech Pathologists have completed cultural awareness induction, training and work experience to deliver culturally responsive services to Aboriginal people in the region.
Where appropriate telehealth services will be utilised to overcome barriers to delivery of outreach care.
